Fire in the Keile yard

It won't have escaped your notice: one of Rotterdam's beautiful incubators has literally gone up in flames. Last week a fire started in the Keilewerf, and the fire could not be brought under control. The building was completely destroyed. But worse: all the work and complete archives of artists are gone. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the material and immaterial damage is enormous.

It is heartwarming to see that so many people immediately came to the rescue. The crowdfunding campaign(https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-de-keilewervers) has now raised over €450,000.

SKAR made workplaces available immediately, for the artists and entrepreneurs who need to get on with their work.

Insurance: can we do it ourselves?

The artists in the Keilewerf were not insured. We know that is true of many artists - often because insurers have requirements that studio buildings cannot meet. Or because they are too expensive. The Keilewerf fire makes it clear that you can lose everything just like that. And there won't always be crowdfunding to compensate for the loss.

We wondered whether it would not be possible to organize one 's own insurance. After all, this has also succeeded with the bread funds, where self-employed people have arranged disability insurance together. So why not for contents as well?

We would like to hear if there are people who are interested in this, and would like to think along in how this could then be started. If you would like to think along, please let us know info@skar-ateliers.nl.

Fire hazard

Fires can start anywhere, including our premises. The biggest risk is in how you handle electricity.

Therefore, we would like to draw your attention to the following points:

  • Electrical equipment should always be off when leaving your studio, this includes taking the standby off.
  • Use only certified switchgear, think extension cords, outlets and lights etc.
  • Do not use meter boxes as storage closets
  • Consider the amount of voltage on outlets and extension cords.
  • Keep in mind that studios are housed in existing buildings. This means that electrical installation options are sometimes limited.

Therefore, because of fire safety, we also ask that the hallways and public areas be left empty. Corridors and stairwells are escape routes and there should be no flammable items there or things that hinder escape. In addition, you are our ears and eyes in the buildings. If you see or hear something, discuss it with your fellow tenants or let us know.

Each year the premises are checked for fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.

During these checks, things are replaced. Sometimes more maintenance needs to be done. This is done in consultation with us at a later time. A sticker with "rejected" on a fire extinguisher or fire hose reel means that minor maintenance needs to be done. These fire extinguishers still work and can be used in case of emergency. Should a fire extinguisher no longer function, it is replaced immediately. Should there be anything that could cause dangerous situations, action will be taken immediately.
