Two New Exhibitions at The Archives - Opening Friday, Nov. 1

On Friday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m., you are welcome to attend the opening of Triple Solo and Lif Laf Minimal, on not one, but two floors at The Archives.

On view on the first floor:
Triple solo
Artists: Marja Zomer, Milou van Ham, Cor van Rooijen

Artist Marja Zomer is showing "ZOMERSOLO": an installation featuring painting and drawing work from the last decade. On Fridays and weekends, Marja Zomer draws 10-minute portraits. Join in and sign up via a sign-up list for a time slot in The Archives or at portretten@marjazomer.nl
Milou van Ham shows 'ODE AAN ONZE DODEN' and chalks the windows around Het Archief with the names of deceased acquaintances of herself and visitors.

On view on the sixth floor:
Lif Laf Minimal
Artists: Merijn Haenen, Herman Lamers, Leslie Nagel, Petra Noordkamp, Ignacy Radtke, Eva Sijstermans

SKAR has made the sixth floor available in November for an exhibition/installation by six artists.
Merijn Haenen will show an autonomous neon work. Herman Lamers will show a sculptural installation. Also on view are kinetic objects by Leslie Nagel, photographic works by Petra Noordkamp, a "moving environment" by Ignacy Radtke and a monumental painting by Eva Sijstermans.

Both exhibitions are on view through Dec. 1, 2024, and open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m.-5 p.m.

You may have already spoken to them, but since September we have three new colleagues: Johan, Annette and Maria!

Annette handles everything related to finances. Whether you have a question about a payment or your bill, she is happy to help.

Maria is our new office manager and makes sure everything in the office runs smoothly. Do you have any general questions? Feel free to send her a message.

Johan is part of our maintenance team. If you have sent a repair request, Johan may come by to carry out the repair. If you have any questions, you can reach him here.

Additional costs not passed on

Just last year we received an after-tax energy bill of over €300,000. That came on top of the amounts we had to pay extra before. We did not have to pass that on to the tenants, thanks to emergency support from the Municipality. We are very happy with that. In previous years, too, we paid part of the energy costs ourselves and did not pass them on. For the coming years, that is not necessary. Moreover, that can't be out of the question either.

Superuse architects help with sustainability efforts

In this day and age, keeping studios functional and affordable is quite a challenge. For an approach that differs from the standard, SKAR engaged the architectural firm Superuse. In saving energy, Superuse focuses mainly on the way the artists use the building. There is a lot to be gained there, says Floris Schiferli of Superuse. "If we let the user be part of the climate control, you can achieve your goals with less investment."

Every two months there is a new artist working on a window painting at SKAR. The latest painting is from Gwen Stok's work In Every Fiber. This poetic graphic novel explores the impact of the colonial past in the Dutch East Indies with stories that linger and others that fade.

Gwen is an illustrator and artist based in Rotterdam. She brings insights about our human nature with a playful and philosophical approach. Her versatile portfolio includes paintings, pen drawings, comics, graphic novels, murals and even apps. For her, as a visual storyteller, it is important to utilize the unique possibilities of each medium so that concepts come to life.

New Creative Opportunities in Rotterdam: Artist in Residence

Casa Chris is a unique artist residency in Charlois, Rotterdam South. The residence offers an inspiring, pleasant temporary living and working place for theater makers, artists, writers, musicians and other artists, where they can develop and realize their new productions and collaborations. This residence has six studios where artists have the opportunity to spend three to six months away from their "normal" living and working environment. Casa Chris was designed with a strong focus on sustainability and creativity.

CrossYart, in collaboration with Verhalenhuis Belvédère, facilitates a special program since September one or two places for artists on scholarship, who can focus entirely on their projects.
