Paper Gardens
Artists Marcelo Gimenes and Jaap Snijder have revived a traditional Dutch craft after more than 200 years.
Their painted wallpaper is made entirely by hand. "Our wallpaper is a contemporary version of its historical predecessors. Of primary importance is that it must fit into the space for which it is made".
Just like, for example, the best-known Dutch wallpaper painter Jurriaan Andriessen (1742-1819), Snijder&CO make detailed sketches and sometimes a model in advance to give the customer a good insight into the end product. "That is very important, painting wallpaper is a very precise process where colours, shapes and light have to match each other well. It is above all a labour-intensive craft".
"After completing our gardens of paper, we see time and again how the whole space undergoes a metamorphosis. The atmosphere and ambiance
that the rooms get through painted wallpaper is breathtaking. Even for us, the end result is always a special moment. Light, colour and shape come together to transform the walls and give the interior a history of its own".
