The abstract space in
The dream to paint a universe is the starting point of my artistry. This ambitious give I work on enormous, abstract canvases, which reflect much more than just the grandeur and beauty of such a gigantic space. Also the cruelty and survival of nature in such a space is an important element for me.
Learning to understand and map a universe is an instinctive process, which is actually only beginning to take shape in the last three years. Partly due to a residency of 3 months in New York ( NARS Foundation ) I came to the conclusion that dynamics plays a crucial role in understanding a universe. The abstract image that eventually emerges must therefore not only reflect an infinite space, but also contain a dynamic character within it. A painterly challenge that I am beginning to master more and more.
The coincidence of dark and sweet elements on the abstract canvas also enhances the silent intensity of the painting. Abstract painting is an ideal medium for this. Important sources of inspiration for me are Eastern & Western painting, astronomy and Friedrich Nietzsche.

Douwe Halbertsma
Douwe Halbertsma (1980) is an artist who lives and works in Rotterdam.
He makes sculptures and works in public space. As a sculptor Douwe takes a fresh look at tradition, but just as easily refers to comic strip and other visual culture. His fascination for the formal possibilities and limitations of the medium is always accompanied by a relativizing humour that gives his sculptures air. In this way the play with the fundamental concepts of sculpture, such as the tension between the presence and absence of space, the presence and absence of mass, does not remain an abstract concept. But it always gets a consequence in the meaning of his sculptures. Since his graduation in 2003 from the 'Free Art' department of the Hogeschool vd Kunsten Arnhem, Douwe has exhibited nationwide at places such as; Stroom (The Hague), Reinier van Ewijk Projects (Amsterdam) and Grote Kerk (The Hague). He has also realised various commissions, both in public space and for private clients.
