Middenin Rotterdam neemt een nieuw, kunstenaar-gedreven, multidisciplinair en gemeenschapsgericht initiatief vorm aan: Poreus. We verwelkomen kunstenaars uit alle disciplines, samen met cultuurwerkers, activisten en sociale en ecologische practici van alle leeftijden met een kritische en betrokken visie. Heb je een werkruimte nodig voor je praktijk en heb je de interesse en het verlangen om actief en collectief mee te helpen bouwen aan en het beheren van een nieuw initiatief, dan zou Poreus een plek voor jou kunnen zijn.
Gevestigd aan de Mauritsstraat 36 (het voormalige onderkomen van het Piet Zwart Instituut) biedt Poreus:
- 16 ruime ateliers voor individuele en collectieve makers.
- Een publieke projectruimte van 100m² voor lokale, nationale en internationale projecten, evenementen en tentoonstellingen, die geprogrammeerd wordt door leden van het initiatief en door anderen.
- Een gemeenschapstuin om te verzorgen en mee te werken.
- Een gemeenschapskeuken en mogelijk een publieke werkplaats.
Door een diverse gemeenschap van kunstenaars en creatievelingen onder één dak samen te brengen en een ondersteunende infrastructuur te bieden, wil Poreus uitgroeien tot een levendig glokaal en gesitueerd initiatief. Een broedplaats voor extra-disciplinaire experimenten, artistieke creatie en translokale uitwisseling van uiteenlopende kennis en ervaringen.
Nadat SKAR het gebouw met een 25-jarig huurcontract had verworven van de Gemeente Rotterdam, nodigde SKAR de kunstenaars Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson uit om een nieuw initiatief voor deze locatie te bedenken. Voortbouwend op hun samenwerkende, kritische en maatschappelijk betrokken kunstpraktijk, legde het duo de basisvisie vast voor dit ontluikende, gemeenschapsgeleide initiatief, dat samen met de leden verder ontwikkeld zou worden, en gaf het zijn naam.
Wat vind je in Poreus
Het initiatief beheert gezamenlijk een gemeenschapskeuken, een gedeelde tuin en een projectruimte voor bijeenkomsten, publieke evenementen en tentoonstellingen, te programmeren door de leden en door anderen.
De 16 werkruimtes worden verhuurd aan individuen, collectieven, of meerdere individuen of collectieven die samen één ruimte delen. Ze worden gefaseerd toegewezen, te beginnen in oktober.
Ateliers:
- SKAR-tarief ateliers: Variërend van 33m² (€368,67 incl. btw per maand) tot 43m² (€480,39 incl. btw per maand).
- SKAR-plus ateliers: Variërend van 43m² (€655,57 incl. btw per maand) tot 51m² (€777,53 incl. btw per maand).
- Opslagruimtes: Worden op een later moment verhuurd.

Wie zoeken we?
Individuen en collectieven uit alle disciplines — waaronder beeldende kunst, design, architectuur, podiumkunsten, curatorschap, culturele productie, ecologische en sociale praktijk, activisme en grassroots-organisaties — die zich herkennen in een van onderstaande criteria:
- Gepassioneerd & ambitieus: Practici van elke leeftijd, elk carrièrestadium en elke achtergrond, toegewijd aan hun vak en met de wens om te werken in een dynamische, gedeelde en multidisciplinaire omgeving.
- Gemeenschapsgericht: Individuen en collectieven die werk- en ontmoetingsruimte nodig hebben en actief willen bijdragen aan het organiseren, runnen en vormgeven van Poreus.
- Betrokken: Creatievelingen die zich actief inzetten voor artistieke, maatschappelijke, ecologische, culturele, historische of politieke kwesties, vanuit een diverse en inclusieve benadering.
Aanmeld- en selectieprocedure
Om het initiatief de ruimte te geven rustig van start te gaan, worden ateliers verhuurd in maandelijkse blokken van vier vooraf geselecteerde ruimtes.
Onderdeel van het verhuurproces is een oriëntatieavond. Tijdens deze bijeenkomst krijg je de kans om de ruimtes te bekijken, jezelf voor te stellen, meer te leren over de visie van Poreus, kennis te maken met het kunstenaarsduo Libia & Ólafur, in contact te komen met andere geïnteresseerde aanmelders, en je ateliervoorkeuren te delen.
Fase 1, belangrijke data:
- Aanmeldtermijn: dinsdag 15 september 2026, 23:59 uur.
- Uitnodigingen: donderdag 17 en vrijdag 18 september 2026.
- Oriëntatieavond: dinsdag 22 september 2026.
- Ingangsdatum: geselecteerde Fase 1-ateliers zijn beschikbaar vanaf 1 oktober 2026.
Fase 2-aanmeldingen openen kort na afloop van Fase 1.

Poreus – Open Call
Right in the center of Rotterdam, a new artist-driven, multidisciplinary and community-led initiative, Poreus, is taking shape. We welcome artists from all disciplines, alongside cultural workers, activists, and social and environmental practitioners of all ages with a critical and engaged vision. If you need a workspace for your practice and have the interest and desire to actively and collectively help shape and manage a new initiative, Poreus could be a place for you.
Located at Mauritsstraat 36 (the former home of the Piet Zwart Institute), Poreus offers:
- 16 spacious studios for individual and collective creators.
- A 100m2 public project space for local, national and international projects, events and exhibitions, that will be programmed by members of the initiative and by others.
- A community garden to take care of and work with.
- A community kitchen and possibly a public workshop space.
Bringing together a diverse community of artists and creatives under one roof and providing this supportive infrastructure, Poreus aims to become a vibrant glocal and situated initiative. A hub for extra-disciplinary experimentation, artistic creation, and translocal exchange of distinct knowledges and experiences.
After securing the building from the Municipality of Rotterdam on a 25-year lease, SKAR invited artists Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson to conceive a new initiative for the location. Drawing upon their collaborative, critical, and socially engaged art practice, the duo established the foundational vision for this emerging, community-led initiative, which would be further developed together with its members, and gave it its name.
What you’ll find in Poreus
The initiative collectively manages a communal kitchen, a shared garden and a project space for gatherings, public events, and exhibitions and gatherings, to be programmed by the members and by others.
The 16 workspaces are to be rented out to individuals, collectives and individuals or multiple collectives sharing one space. They will be allocated in phases, starting in October.

Who are we looking for?
Individuals and collectives across all disciplines—including the visual arts, design, architecture, performing arts, curation, cultural production, environmental and social practice, activism and grassroots organizations — who recognize themselves in any of the further criteria:
- Passionate & Ambitious: Practitioners of any age and stage in their carreer and background, who are dedicated to their craft and want to work in a dynamic, shared and multidisciplinary environment.
- Community-Minded: Individuals and collectives who need workspaces and gathering space and would like to actively participate in organizing, running and shaping Poreus.
- Engaged: Creatives who actively engage with artistic, societal, ecological, cultural, historical, or political issues using a diverse and inclusive approach.
Application & Selection Procedure
To give the initiative room to start gently, studios will be rented out in monthly blocks of four pre-selected spaces.
Part of the on-boarding process is an orientation evening. This gathering offers you the opportunity to view the spaces, introduce yourself, get to know more about the vision for Poreus, meet the artist duo Libia & Ólafur, connect with other interested applicants, and state your specific studio preferences.
Phase 1, Key Dates:
- Application Deadline: Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 23:59.
- Invitation Notifications: Thursday, September 17 and Friday, September 18, 2026.
- Orientation Evening: Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
- Move-In Date: Selected Phase 1 studios are available starting October 1, 2026.
Phase 2 applications will open shortly after Phase 1 concludes.
